abstract = "Geomorphometry has shown great progress following the use of
digital elevation models (DEMs), especially global DEMs derived
from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM); it has become a
powerful framework for the discrimination of geological units
based on associated geomorphological characteristics. We applied
algorithms to SRTM DEMs in order to derive the following
geomorphometric variables: height, amplitude, coherence, slope,
hypsometric integral, predominance, relief anomaly, roughness,
surface (SI) and terrain ruggedness (TRI) indexes. We believe
these variables could help to uncover topographic patterns
associated to the Tupanciret{\~a} geological formation (after
Jurassic-Cretaceous period) and the Serra Geral geological
formation (Jurassic-Cretaceous period). The geomorphometric
variables: height, amplitude and SI and TRI indexes performed
better when discriminating the spatial occurrence of the
Tupanciret{\~a} and Serra Geral geological formations. This
result indicates that the aforementioned geomorphometric variables
could potentially improve the geological mapping of Rio Grande do
Sul state; its main contribution would be the increase of the
accuracy in the discrimination of deposits of sediments from
Tupanciret{\~a} geological formation. This is a major
contribution, once the cartographic base currently in use was
elaborated in the 1960-70s and it does not take into account the
myriad of geological data widely available nowadays from diverse
sources such as remote sensing. These data will help to solve
incongruences and enhance the current geologic mapping for Rio
Grande do Sul, South of Brazil; also contributing towards the
refinement of the geological evolution of the Intracratonic Basin
of Paran{\'a}.",
